Who is John Cabot?
John Cabot was an Italian navigator who came to Bristol when he was about fifty years old. Born in Gaeta and later a citizen of Venice,Italy, his Italian name of Giovanni Caboto became shortened to the English style John Cabot after he had lived in Bristol. In Italian, ‘Caboto’ means “ a coastal seaman” and was quite a common name given to sailors and navigators.
He was married to a Venetian wife whose name was Mattea. His ship, the “Matthew” was almost certainly named after her.
Cabot was a lifelong friend of Christopher Columbus who also came from Italy. In 1493, Cabot learned of his friend’s voyage of discovery that had taken him to the West Indies - thinking that he had found a sea route westward to China and Japan.

What happened to John Cabot?
At first:
John Cabot approached the kings of Spain and Portugal for sponsorship that would enable him to get an expedition together to similarly explore a new route to the orient by sailing west, but Spain and Portugal were not interested in Cabots ideas.

What did you learn from the video clip?
I learned a lot in this clip. The first part of this clip is the introduction of John Cabot. He did a really good job in the first vogage,so when he came back he became a hero in all the people's heart and he also got lots of hail.In the seconed times' voyage he found lots of fish and he took back some of them.
After three years another navigator came to this island and he found some people in here, then he took the 50 people back.In the end all the 50 people were died.

What does his ship "Mathew" look like?

This ship is 78' long, carrying a beam that is 20'6" and a sail that measures approximately 2,360 square feet. The ship was built with the intention of what John Cabot's...
Introduction:
The Matthew was named after John Cabot's wife Mattea. The Matthew was a caravel sailed by John Cabot in 1497 from Bristol to North America, presumably Newfoundland. After a voyage which had got no further than Iceland, Cabot left again with only one vessel, the Matthew, a small ship (50 tons), but fast and able. The crew consisted of only 18 people. The Matthew departed either 2 May or 20 May 1497. She sailed to Dursey Head (latitude 51°36N), Ireland, from where she sailed due west, expecting to reach Asia. However, landfall was reached in North America on 24 June 1497. His precise landing-place is a matter of much controversy, with Cape Bonavista or St. John's in Newfoundland the most likely sites.
Cabot went ashore to take possession of the land, and explored the coast for some time, probably departing on 20 July. On the homeward voyage his sailors incorrectly thought they were going too far north, so Cabot sailed a more southerly course, reaching Brittany instead of England. On 6 August he arrived back in Bristol.
